Head in the clouds part two (including Po’ Boy)

Hello, kiddies.

First and foremost, I hope you all had a great weekend, you know, with Record Store Day and 4:20 day and all… and Earth Day too, imagine that! I sadly could not participate in the former for the obviously painful reasons… I won’t even comment on the latter. I do have a remedy for that though, I’ll get to that sooner than later, but allow me another quick indulgence if you will. It won’t disappoint, I promise.

I kinda got away from posting mixes with non-vinyl sources, and for good reason…they sound great and all, but the times have definitely changed in the land of blog over the past year. I kind of promised myself that I wouldn’t break out the soapbox too much, better yet, I wouldn’t let the soapbox get in the way of serving up the funky eats. Suffice it to say, the message is still very much in need of being spread, but there are so many out there that really tell the truth that very much needs to be heard. I hope you all can keep up with the Best of the Left podcast. It’s the best way to keep one angry enough… I’ll still do what I do in the name of doing my part though, and that’s the best I can do since I am clearly a victim of the madness.

Anyway, on to the meat of the conversation with another from the holidaze sessions.

This one was done around Thanksgiving of last year whilst hanging out with a friend and a bottle of something, most likely some sweet Belgian nectar… after much self doubt and (at the time) jonesing for some new 45’s. I was inspired to do it this way by a couple of my esteemed colleagues from the mixcloud fam. I’ve name-checked them before, sure, and will do so again in good fashion before too long. More on that in a bit…

In any event, this is the result. When the bottle was tipped, I was happy. It’s a collection of some great tunes that most of you should know well, and some you may not have heard in some years. It was also a means of free advertisment for the good folks at Freestyle Records. They also hold it down at Mixcloud too… check it out for some nice mixes and some exclusive ish from their rich catalog, and of course, please support their efforts if you are able. It’s also the answer to a question posed by the one called iDiO7 SAVAN7…I do owe a debt for the inspiration, the will to keep the soul a rollin’…

I intend to be back in some capacity though, so until then, have fun(k), and please be safe.

The first of May is coming… please join the fight in whatever way you are able.

Happy Spring!

Hello, kiddies.

Countdown… “t” minus 2 weeks (give or take a day) and counting.

Spring has indeed sprung, quickly and without warning. With it, another respite, which I certainly plan to use wisely… Here’s the second session from the last fire haul. I answered the call of my esteemed colleague HeavySoulBrutha this time, not only because it’s lots of fun to hear good 45’s, but because he’s just an all around good joe. He’s been keeping it funky for five years and counting, so it’s always a pleasure to drop by his spot and share. Much respect, good brutha!

Even More Warmed Over Leftovers…

Hello, kiddies.

I finally got the chance to put up this jam packed post.  Get comfortable and be sure to look at the extra links…

I am really enjoying the respite and everything it has to offer. I even got the gumption to bring Fufu Stew Too back from the dead with two new posts. Check ‘em out by clicking on the images if you like.

Now, as the times we live in continue to deteriorate (thanks a lot to those who already know who they are and what they’re doing wrong), I believe the only thing that really keeps me together anymore, my wife, family and friends notwithstanding, is music. News depresses me these days. Really, why can’t people just get along… I am trying to slowly ration the new scores, especially since I can’t afford another huge digging trip for a while. In doing so, I came up with this. Some old friends make their scheduled reappearance in this assortment of 45 rpm happiness. For the sake of relevance, I will say that it’s how the music feels at the time it’s felt, meaning that since I need music fed into my ears almost intravenously, oh well, you know! 8KC, one of my Mixcloud colleagues summed it up very nicely by saying this: “So many get caught up in the image of the music that they lose touch with the true source of the music, the Soul. It’s not about how expensive your 45’s records are but how you play them. You play from the Soul!” The quote was lifted from this post here. Truer words have never been spoken. As always, I do indeed put my soul into each mix that I make, and the tunes just have to flow together which may explain why each one feels the way it does at the time it’s felt. In any event, enjoy another heaping helping.

I wanted to share some of the exclusive type stuff that I’ve been putting up over there, but since the embed feature is on the apparent fritz, I’ll have to do so in another way. Just the same, I can’t recommend it enough. Mixcloud is a beautiful place. I hope they never go away!

Well we’ve come to the end of another episode. Everything I did I really enjoyed immensely, and I plan to continue in that enjoyment for as long as the free time holds up. So far so good. Well,’til next time, have fun(k) and as always, please be safe.

Where to begin… the holidaze! UGH!!! Oh well, it’ll be all good on Xmas day.

To each and every one of you who has ever viewed this page, downloaded a mix, left a comment, gave me a link, or in some cases, struck up a friendship through the power of music, I thank you. Well, for the purpose of not spoiling your joy on this most auspicious occasion, which is actually shaping up to be okay. here’s a repost of my Xmas mix from 2008, in case you didn’t get it before or if you want to share it on the fly. Enjoy.

Smokin’ and Compin’ again…

Hello again, kiddies.

Although it’s been a miserable eight weeks away, I was so glad to finally get back into the little room (ahhhh-choo!). God is it dusty in here… and with thousands of records in a disarray, it’s easy to lose motivation. I persevered though, and after a week, I was able to get all the 33’s organised. And since they were all in alphabetical order, it was real easy to dig up this little playlist. I sprinkeld a few 45’s in among the 33’s to create yet another mammoth mix, once again inspired by my pal HeavySoulBrutha, and my hero in the way of the intense Hammond B3 workouts that you’ll soon hear. Some people say they like funk in their jazz, then again some say they like jazz in their funk. Well, I am here to put that debate to rest. No stone left unturned here, I don’t think. Enjoy.

There still ain’t no cure (including Block Party parts 1&2)

Hello, kiddies.

Any thoughts on the new look? I think it’s too busy, but for now it is what it us until I get around to changing it up again.

Now, am I dreading or getting ready for the apparent arrival of summer… with some of the hot days we’ve had here in recent weeks, it looks like it has already come. I am on the fence about it really; summer does mean trips to Delaware and steamed crabs. It also means a brutal workload, but that’s to be expected. At least next term will be my last before I earn my associate’s degree. Let’s see where it all takes me. In any event, I was lucky enough to score a really fruitful gig a couple of weeks ago. My wife volunteered my services to do another rare live appearance for the local YMCA. I got to spin 45’s for a block party to conclude a week of community cleanup in one of Baltimore’s popular neighbourhoods. It felt like the good old days; think of Grand Master Flash and the like, throwing parties in the park… The set was great and surprisingly well received, although I don’t recommend playing records in the heat of the day. The turntables acted like skillets. Thankfully, we were able to put up a tent which cooled things down drastically. Then there was the wind blowing my 45’s off the platters.

All things considered, I had a great time. The Y corporate people loved it, not to mention the crowd, as feel like I stirred up some of those memories of block parties from back in the day for each of them. With my earnings from said gig, I went on a bit of an unexpected digging spree. As I filed away the new scores, I naturally pulled out some old favourites… Of course it’s no surprise that that prompted me to go through the stacks once again and do another easy chair mix on the fly which was inspired by the aforementioned block party.

22 In The Pocket-The Kingpins (Atco)
23 Psychedelic Shingaling-Lou Courtney (Riverside LP track)

Here’s the bonus. And that is primarily because I spent the last day performing major surgery on ol’ bessie. Yes, the time has come to break down and buy a new computer. I am dreading that too. This is an unexpected remake of an old mix I posted wayyyyy back in 2007 which I was compelled to pull out again. I added six extra tracks just because it felt good. Here’s a bit of what I wrote from the original post:

Today’s recipe is dedicated to the anticipated return of the hot summer night. When the grill’s just hot enough for that last sandwich, the wine bottle’s only got a few drops left and everyone’s just sitting around waiting for the radio to play one more classic. I can clearly see the scene of a cookout going well into the midnight hour in the middle of a tight knit neighbourhood. No time to catch last call at the local bar for a quick six pack of not so good beer, so the next best thing is to raid the liquor cabinet for the last few shots from the Christmas party booze the year before. Can you see it? Well that’s when the last guest arrives, loaded to the gills (don’t worry, there’s a designated driver…) bearing the most delicious dessert they can muster and you can fill in the blanks as you see fit. Uh oh, hope nobody calls a cop…

I put the “grinch” gear away (including AntiDivas No. 11 and much more)

Hello, kiddies.

Here’s this year’s tree, lovingly trimmed by me and my beloved Leslie. Not a bad job, huh? We’re still trying to keep the tinsel out of our cats’ reach though…

Well, here we are at the end of another year here in the Fufu Stew kitchen. If I told you it was an easy year, with exhausting studies and other assorted mayhem at every turn, I would certainly be telling a lie. All things considered, I’ve truly been blessed. Now if 45s are still your bag (and I am equally as sorry that I’ve been lacking in the 45 rpm exercises), here’s a special Christmas treat from the Four Brothers Beats team. I’ve been waiting for this day for months. Finally, the transcontinental clocks are all synchronised. I joined forces with our resident DJ and brother in arms, the mighty LP2, who most of you should remember as being not only one of the finalists from the Damn! contest (more on that later), but also the winner of last year’s 4BB logo contest. Together we came up with a nice little 45 rpm exercise where I supplied the vinyl, and the good brother put his magic touch upon it. This is the first of what I hope will be many collaborations.

Please download and enjoy 4BB Breaks Vol. 1by dropping in at the 4BB compound.

But before you do that, I’d like to say that the Damn! Contest was a smash success. It was a knock down drag out remix fest. Big congratulations to Gorque the undisputed winner… For his hard work, he got a real nice prize package… I myself am deeply jealous. The runner up didn’t do too bad either. Great work was done by all the contestants. As an extra special treat, I am pleased to be able to bring you the official Damn! remix EP. The tracklisting is as follows:

01-Headstone (Original Mix)

02-Get Your Grown Man On (Original Mix)

03-Headstone (Gorque’s Champion Remix)

04-Headstone (LP2 Remix)

05-Get Your Grown Man On (Gorque Remix)

06-Get Your Grown Man On (C.H. Remix)

07-Get Your Grown Man On (Saft Sthlm Remix)

08-Get Your Grown Man On (Mofo Trio Remix)

If you haven’t already picked this one up from 4BB, then please download and enjoy the Damn! Remix EP, courtesy of the good folks at Pope/Universal, and of course, Damn! Much respect. The original versions of “Get Your Grown Man On” and “Headstone” are available on the latest Damn! CD, “Let’s Zoom In”. Be sure to snag a copy from Dusty Groove America.

Well, I’m outta here. I’ve got some gifts to open and some food to eat, not to mention, some music to play. I’m going to try with all my might to return on New Years’ Day to kick off another year of mouth-watering freeform goodness. I want to thank those of you who continue to be in my corner as I press on. I know I don’t have the greatest blog out there, but I try my best to do what I love, and that alone is reason enough to soldier on. I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday season, and remember, whatever you do, be sure to do it good. Until next year, have fun(k) and as always, please be safe.

Peace and blessings.

Here’s your Damn! update (and other news)…

Hello, kiddies…

For those of you keeping score, the 4BB/Damn! remix contest is in full effect. We received over 20 quality entries from some Damn! fine remixers which are up and available to stream over at 4BB Weekly. I’m keeping my vote a secret for now, but you can certainly drop by, check ‘em out and cast a vote for your favourite :)

Big thanks once again to Pope Records/Universal Music, Music Super Circus, and of course, to Damn! for allowing us the privilege to bring this contest to the masses. These cats deserve to be heard, in fact, you can now pick up their latest offering. “Let’s Zoom In” at the mighty Dusty Groove America! In addition, the exclusive Headstone EP is still available too… grab yours before it’s too late :)

In other news, I am feverishly working on several things right now whilst still trying to maintain a perfect average this term… Look for at least three new joints to drop here real soon, including a new one from my friend Tony C, and a tribute to my esteemed colleague and hero, none other that the mighty Larry Grogan who as most of you should know by now recently celebrated FIVE YEARS of consistent blogging perfection! A true feat indeed, which only a few can say they’ve reached. Big congratulations to you, keep up the tremendous work!

Oh yeah, I also bought some more new 45’s… :D

Until the next time we meet, have fun(k), and as always, please be safe.

Peace and blessings.
