Hello, kiddies.

Just when you thought the kitchen was closed, along comes a once in a lifetime event that changes the landscape… For the next installment of Come On In My Kitchen, I am proud to present yet another one of the true veterans of the land of blog. You all have to know the mighty Todd Lucas! He, along with his partner Brian Marshall are the proprietors of the long running blog It’s Great Shakes which is in their fourth year of existence. There you’ll find some of the finest 45 rpm grooves around from R&B to Garage and everything in between, all presented in glorious monaural sound (with the exception of those odd stereo issues). Their education has been most inspiring to me in my quest to obtain 45s, and from the looks of this outstanding playlist, I’ve got some serious work to do. Now according to Todd, this is the first time that he’s done a live mix with two turntables so it is my extreme pleasure to be able to present it to you in its original state. There’s a bunch of must have stuff here so get those dancing shoes on!

1. The Five Du-Tones - Shake A Tail Feather (One-derful!) The original and greatest version of the classic tune. Easily the the most common of their records, you can’t go wrong with any Five Du-Tones single (and I agree wholeheartedly… I especially like the flip side on this one).

2. Mitch Ryder - I’d Rather Go To Jail (New Voice) Somehow this was relegated to the b-side of a single in the summer of ‘67. I guess the times were a-changin’. I think this ranks right up there with Mitch’s best.

3. The Chylds - I Want More (Lovin) (Giant) Great 1967 r&b tinged, garage rocker out of Ohio. You’ll also hear bits and pieces of Paul Revere & the Raiders, Mitch Ryder and maybe even ? and the Mysterians. The flip is another strong garage rocker, “Hay Girl”.

4. The Bad Boys - Love (Paula) Still more great, r&b influenced garage rock. This record is a pretty easy find. A nice copy shouldn’t cost more than $10.

5. The Dartells - Where Do We Stand? (HBR) The “Hot Pastrami” guys a few years hence, with the b-side of their outing on the always interesting HBR imprint.

6. The Ideals - Mojo Hanna (Cortland) I don’t really know anything about these guys. I love their version of this oft’ recorded r&b tune.

7. Jekyl & the Hydes - High Heeled Sneakers (G.A.R.) Another outfit that I really know nothing about, with a nice, garaged-up version of the Tommy Tucker classic.

8. The British Walkers - Shake (Cameo) There are lots of garage versions of this Sam Cooke tune. The Surfaris even had a go at it. This is my favorite of the bunch.

9. Donoman with the Skylarks - Do You Know (Everything ‘Bout Love) (Thunderbird) Don’t really know a thing about Donoman. I was introduced to this via a Brian Marshall post at our blog. He even spotted a copy for me at a record show. And now, here it is.

10. Bunker Hill - Hide & Go Seek, Part 1 (Mala) Vincent mentioned how much he liked the Sheep’s version of this. Here’s the original, which was a charting hit.

11. The Ohio Express - Roll It Up (Buddah) Great bubblegum soul instro on the flipside of the 1969 hit, “Mercy”.

12. Ray Sharp and the Soul Set - Earthquake (Sock & Soul) I have no idea who they were. I’d lay money on blue-eyed soulsters though. Love the explosive sound and guitar on this.

13. Opus IV - Mess Around (MGM) I’m at a loss on these guys. It’s a great r&b flavored garage rocker though.

14. Rhoda Scott - I-Yi-Yi-Yi, Part 1 (Tru-Sound) Rhoda Scott was and is a jazz bandleader and organist. If this tune is any indication, her band also had a wild r&b streak. Some great sax and an unidentified male vocalist lead the way here.

15. Rocker Roberts - The T-Bird (Roulette) A.K.A. Rocky Roberts & the Airedales or so it seems. Another record introduced to me by one of Brian’s blog entries. I have an earlier version of this song, titled “Thunderbird Twist” by the Thunderbirds.

16. Lowell Fulsom - The Thing (Kent) Really cool guitar instro by the blues great.

17. Sebastian and the House Rockers - Nobody Can Do The Dog Like I Do (Key) Incredible, lo-fi coupling of Rufus Thomas’ “The Dog” and The Isley’s “Nobody But Me” by this Richmond, VA bunch.

18. Jack Harris and the Arabians - Dog Wild (Witch) Wild, manic r&b shouter that’s over all too soon. I have no info on the band, at all.

19. The Del-Mars - Snacky Poo, Part 1 (Mercury) Same deal here. I know nothing about the Del-Mars. “Snacky Poo” is a reworking of “Bertha Lou”.

20. Bob Kuban and the In-Men - Pretzel Party (Musicland U.S.A.) This is from a bit after their big hit, “The Cheater”. The flip is the like-minded “The Pretzel” for double the fun.

21. The Rotten Kids - Let’s Stomp (Mercury) Garage version of the Bobby Comstock hit. “Let’s Stomp” was written by the three guys who’d go on to become the Strangeloves. I thought this might be them under another guise but was assured the Rotten Kids were a real band unto themselves.

22. The Sparkles - Hipsville 29 B.C. (Hickory) One of my all-time favorite garage rockers, just completely wild. The Sparkles had several singles for the Hickory label. “No Friend of Mine” is on the Nuggets box set.

23. The Wailers - Mashi (Imperial) This Pacific Northwest band started as mainly instrumental rockers and stuck around long enough to make some good 60’s garage rock. “Out of Our Tree” is on the Nuggets box. I love the way that “Mashi” swings.

24. Larry Knight & the Upsetters - Hurt Me (Golden World) I don’t know a thing about these guys. Perhaps the only garage release on Detroit’s Golden World label.

25. The Swamp Rats - It’s Not Easy (CO & CE) Notorious garage band, probably best known for ripping remakes of “Psycho” and “Louie Louie”. Here, they tackle a Jagger-Richards composition and sound a bit like the Velvet Underground in the process.

26. The Blendells - Huggie’s Bunnies (Reprise) The flip of this, “La La La La La” was a minor hit in 1964. I like Huggie’s Bunnies even better, with its wailing sax and driving guitar. Great tune by this east Los Angeles combo.

Hello, kiddies.

Here’s hoping you all had a good weekend-slash-holiday, but now it’s time to get back to business…

Leslie and I returned from a rather relaxing vacation as most of you know. Dogwood Acres hasn’t changed a bit since last Fall, except the new spot that opened up a few weeks ago. Amazing that one has to travel all the way to Delaware for a decent dozen of Maryland crabs. I’ll give the spot a shoutout when I retrieve the business card that they gave us.

As far as the wedding is concerned, I must respect Leslie’s wishes and not post any of the pictures that were taken. She’s not all that keen on having her picture taken even though both families insisted on it. Maybe I can persuade her to overcome her fear one day… I will say that the ceremony was very sweet and simple. Big shouts to Ms. Booker, the lovely lady who performed it. We both dug the softness of her voice which added more of an intimate touch. Married life won’t change this armchair DJ though, I can assure you. I’ll be back in the saddle next week with another action packed installment so hold tight. I am also pleased to announce the return of Come On In My kitchen! Two more of my favourite blogging colleagues have agreed to bless us with their yummy treats. The first one will be served up piping hot later on today so keep the RSS feeds warm…

Still way too many things going on otherwise so I must get out of here and get ‘em done, but before I hit the dusty trail, I’m pleased to announce that my first official post as a member of Four Brothers Beats is up and running so drop by and have a looksee… I was really blessed to come into a huge lot of vinyl yesterday; over SIX HUNDRED new albums have found their way into the ever growing pantry so you know what that means…

Thanks to each and every one of you who sent us good wishes; Leslie was astonished by all the nice comments and emails that came from all over the world! For all of you new patrons (and some of you older ones too), don’t forget about the massive Back Catalogue… There’s a mix on just about every post so feel free to go back in time and enjoy. I’ll be back lickety split. Have a good week and as always, be safe.

Peace and blessings.

Hello, kiddies.

Well, the time has come. The next time we meet, I will no longer be a bachelor…

Before I get to the business at hand, I have an announcement: I was invited to be the newest member of the Four Brothers Beats team this week. For those of you who don’t know about ‘em, I urge you to pay a visit to their spot. They have a good thing going on over there and the fact that they invited me to be a part of the team makes me feel pretty good. I just hope that I can live up to their standard of excellence… and speaking of excellence, it’s time to welcome two new freedom fighters to the growing army, Doctor Okeh’s And It Don’t Stop and the mighty Rock Savage!

Be sure to visit and support their fine blogs.

Now that all that’s taken care of, let me get the party started. I put this recipe together rather quickly this time because lil’ truck was in need of some new sounds to scare the other divers around me. I know I’m not alone when I say that not too many people know how to drive very well, and with the drive to Delaware being rather tedious (the Bay Bridge is always a nightmare), I was in need of some heavy Funk to make the time go by just a bit faster… This is the first half of the sixth installment of the mighty Fufu Funk Fix, which I hope will be a part of the soundtrack for whatever you have in store for the weekend. And even if you’re not celebrating the 4th of July next week, you don’t really need an excuse to shoot off fireworks and have some dinner on the ground, do you… go on. Do it anyway and have a blast!

With that said, it’s time to pack up ol’ Bessie for the trip. Ten days of peace, rest, relaxation, dinner on the ground and of course solid tunage.

Hello, kiddies (and happy Summer).

I’ve got a lot of ground to cover here so I won’t waste any time…

I know it’s been a staggering two weeks since we last got together. Not to worry, I used the time wisely. Even with the blistering heat and having to move ol’ Bessie to a cooler part of the domicile, the record digging retreat is going very well, in fact a little too well because I will be VERY busy sorting through even more 45s and another crate full of LPs. Yes, big, BIG ups to my fam back at the house for FINALLY letting me sift through their crates. I’ve only been pestering them about it for about twenty years, but now we come to the payoff. It was just like I envisioned it as a child, only this time I didn’t get scolded for browsing. Instead, I took on the task of ripping all these records for them and putting them on CDs. See, their education and my persistence paid huge dividends once and for all. It’s a classic example of the student showing the teacher a thing or two… Here is where I send a BIG shoutout to the Four Brothers Beats team, not only for being one of the premier places to check out super-rare stuff, but for allowing me to contribute to the cause with a few of my new scores. I will be making contributions to their ever-increasing archive from time to time so be sure to check ‘em out and as always, show your love.

Now for the surprise that I’ve been saving…

After seven years, my beloved Leslie and I will be getting married!!! No, that ain’t us in the image above. In fact we don’t even plan to get all gussied up like the couple in the image above. We chose to have a small ceremony with a few friends and family which will take place at the local courthouse here in town this coming Friday. Afterward, we are off to our summer place for a honeymoon/much needed vacation which for me will last ten whole days! I trust you know what that means… To my esteemed colleagues who I have not sent a personal email announcing this event, I humbly apologise, but as one would expect, there’s been so much going on the past few weeks. I’m managing my time fairly well though, and still with a seven day work week… damn!

Now I will be back in the saddle next week with another tasty recipe to take you through the upcoming holiday. I’ve got two thoughts that have been running through my head so it looks as though I’ll have to flip a coin and see which one gets posted. Now if you can’t wait that long, then I urge you to head over and visit my friend Jason at Shindiggit. I promised to contribute a mix for his long running blog some time ago and now it has come to pass. Click on the image below for the whole skinny.

I must also get another shameless plug in there for the mighty DJ Bluewater who dropped a lovely surprise in my inbox yesterday. For those of you who are in the know, you know where to go…

Well, I need to rush off to the store and pick up some Old Bay so’s I can make dinner and I also need to put another record on the fire… I will be back once more before the big day so until then, have a good one and as always, be safe.

Peace and blessings.

Hello, kiddies.

Another weekend is fast approaching but before I go any further, I must apologise for my premature commentary last week. I really don’t like to let my personal issues get in the way of the blog but as it stood, I wasn’t in the best of spirits for a number of reasons. Would you believe in the course of a few short days, my mood went from sour to sweet with the acquisition of about 100 or so new 45s that came from several different places. Suffice it to say, the Guru gets big ups for coming through once again with the heat, but I must also give a big shoutout to the proprietor of Then And Now Records located in downtown Arbutus for directing me to the somewhat secret stash as well as giving me first dibs on the new arrivals. Big shouts must also go to Bill’s uncle who I had the pleasure of meeting last week. After a few hours of conversation (and a bottle of Chardonnay) he managed to make my jaw hit the floor by offering to contribute his extensive record collection to the Fufu Stew experience. So far I’ve only scratched the surface of what he has to offer so as far as I’m concerned, the sky’s the limit… Anyway, enough of my rambling on. I’m going on record now to say that I will continue to serve up new batches of Fufu Stew. Thanks to some of the issues that I alluded to earlier, I won’t be posting as often as I’d like, but as long as my iPod and the in-dash CD player in lil’ truck still work, I will continue to make mixes and bring them to you as often as I am able. I want to thank my friends and colleagues who offered words of encouragement and concern last week. It really means a lot to know that I am still bringing joy to all of you and I will continue to do my best not to disappoint. With that said, it’s time to get back to business and play a bit of catch up with this, my latest all 45 rpm exercise which ironically enough is called

The next time we meet I will have a VERY BIG bombshell for you but now I am going to spend the bulk of the weekend troubleshooting with this new high definition monitor. Yeah, the folks at Verizon came through at long last. Now the fiber optic experience is complete! Ol’ Bessie and the cable box are on board, but the DVD player is waiting patiently to join in on the fun. Before I toddle off to bed, I do want to give a shoutout to the team at My Favourite Sound for continuing to fight the good fight. He was gracious enough to put together a nice bag of all vinyl “riddim” to usher in the warm and sunny weather. Around these parts, that could be a little premature according to the weatherman as he is predicting a weekend full of rain. So far it’s been rather nice outside, and since I really don’t trust weathermen too much, I’ll take the sunshine and hope that it continues. If the weather isn’t up to snuff in your part of the world, then let this delightful mix brighten up your day…
