A repost for the holidaze…

Hello, kiddies.

Where to begin… the holidaze! UGH!!! Oh well, it’ll be all good on Xmas day.

In any event, it bears repeating that through all of my adversity, I am still very thankful. I can never forget that. I am especailly thankful for the apparent success of this here blog. Four complete years… wow! Of course I was skeptical; I just knew that it would be considered an afterthought, but a few hundred thousand hits later, I was proven wrong. To each and every one of you who has ever viewed this page, downloaded a mix, left a comment, gave me a link, or in some cases, struck up a friendship through the power of music, I thank you. I thank you. I thank you.

Well, for the purpose of not spoiling your joy on this most auspicious occasion, which is actually shaping up to be okay. here’s a repost of my Xmas mix from 2008, in case you didn’t get it before or if you want to share it on the fly. Enjoy.

Tony C. and his divas to the rescue once again (including Woman Got Soul)

Hello, kiddies.

Today’s post is being brought to you by REAL LIFE ISSUES… yes that’s right, REAL LIFE ISSUES… a blogger’s number one excuse for failing to post regularly. And so easy to use too, all you have to do is just wake up some mornings… really, I am exaggerating. It is going to be another busy (and from the looks of things, extremely tough) term with another essay due in a week and intense computer programming lessons, but I have to press on and get it done. I do have some incentive though; I got a letter in the mail from the president of my university that says I once again made the “list” for outstanding academic achievement. Last term’s final scores were a 94 and a 98! With only five more terms to go before I obtain my associate’s degree (about fifteen more months of study), I am confident that it will all be worth it.

Just like I promised, the mighty Tony C. has returned to the kitchen to bless us once again. This time, the pots are spilling over with more of the delectable flavour of those sweet soul sisters. Let’s get right to it… without further ado, here’s Tony.

Hello Soul Stewers, Vincent has very kindly allowed me back into the kitchen with my new mix ‘Woman Got Soul’.
Inspired by the Chef’s excellent AntiDivas mixes I decided to put one together myself, but with a Dame Shirley Bassey track in the mix, (I) decided the use of AntiDiva hugely inappropriate!!!!
While on the subject of Dame Shirley I must confess that Vehicle is from a compilation as it was not officially released on vinyl… It was down to the very helpful members over at the brilliant ‘Very Good Plus’ forum that I managed to track it down.
I have tried to incorporate several genres to include R n B, Soul, Funk, Jazz and a bit of Psych for your listening pleasure! Kicking off I thought it only right that a true pioneer, the legendary Billie Holiday would be the way to go with the superb ‘M
e Myself and I’, released in 1937.
I hope you enjoy the mix and agree with me that whatever style these tunes are performed, all these Woman got Soul!!!!

Cheers, Tony C.

Here is the link for the zip file

Due to the length of the mix, clocking in at over an hour and a half, the zip file had to be broken up into two parts so simply take appropriate action if you want to put it on a blue plate… Tony, thank you so much for this outstanding collection. Again, anytime you want to fall by and share your bounty, you know you are always welcome! 🙂

Wanna hear more? Be sure to check out my friend Mr. Double Down over at The Hook And Sling where Tony urges us to Stop Look and Listen.

If all goes well, this weekend will find yours truly out in the field once again, braving the heat of summer to get some more much needed digging in. The economy isn’t helping the situation any, but I owe it to myself. In any event, I’ll try to be back sooner than later with another batch for your aural consumption so until then stay cool, have fun(k), and as always, please be safe.

Peace and blessings.

More AntiDivas… and a blessing for the Psychedelic Lion

Hello, kiddies.

There was a bit of a struggle with what to cook up next… I haven’t really gotten the live music bug out of my system yet as the following hyperlink suggests. Feel free to click on it and check out this mighty comp that I shared with my man Ronnie over at the Psychedelic Lion but before you do, remember that I did promise y’all more AntiDivas. Now this one has been lodged in my brain for quite some time, so please allow me to express myself for a bit here. It’s been an awful long time since I had a blues fix, so for your enjoyment…

ad10_5graphic_neg

Now as most of you know, the Blues as we know it is the culmination of a lot of different feelings, so it’s here that  I plan to present all of them. The introspeak is presented by Minnie Riperton. Therein was the “conflict” which I rectified, because as much as I enjoyed doing the guest post for Ronnie, I still had a couple more joints that I wanted to add to those mixes, so listen for them in this mix…

Thanks once again to the Psychedelic Lion family for the love. Be sure to drop by and check out my guest post. And since I haven’t done too many shoutouts lately, let me say hello to my friends at ShoMerde.com and La Colmena de Humo. Feel free to fall by their spots too… Well, that’s almost it. For something totally related yet completely different, I left yet another AntiDivas special mix at my other spot for you…click on the image below.

Come and get it… Fufu Stew No. 11… For The Holidaze

xmas-tree

Hello, kiddies.

Well, here we are. Another bout of the holidaze is upon us all, but I don’t feel all “grinchy” this time around. Normally I don’t get into the season too much but for some reason, this year is just a little more special. What do you all think of our tree… Leslie wanted me to let you know that because our cats love tinsel (although their bodies hate it), the tree is a little bare at the bottom. Suffice it to say, time for me is limited once again. Final exams happen this week and then I’ll be free for a major break to return to the blogisphere. I haven’t played many records lately as you may have guessed, but I did have to find a chance to come back at least once more to lay some of my all time fave holidaze choons on y’all. It’s just a few pieces that play in my house whilst trimming trees, baking bread and such. It may seem a little surprising to some but I really don’t have a lot of Christmas music in the pantry, but what I do have in my opinion is absolutely essential. This here is a remade and slightly abridged version of a mix that I made for the College Square Team about four years ago… I hope you kids dig it. Nothing fancy here; I just kinda threw a few numbers in the ol’ fish bowl and picked whatever came up. It was lovingly prepared with the freeform aesthetic in mind so you get lots of flavour, and of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a moment to reflect on the mighty Godfather (I wipe a tear from my eye cos it’s another year that he isn’t here)… Now I’m sure I missed quite a few, but my man TGrundy can fill the void nicely with these Triple Play Thursday goodies, A Funky Christmas and A Lonely Christmas. Once again I dedicate this one to the College Square team, and to our beloved friend KT who makes the trek back east, Leslie and I can’t wait to see you 🙂 And of course, to all of you who have helped to make my stay here in the land of blog a wonderful experience, I say thank you… I’ve learned a lot, I’ve been blessed with a lot, and I have bought even more…

and now for the closing commentary…

Looks like another year of this little adventure is rapidly coming to a close. Thank you all for being so kind the past couple of years. I am looking forward to Twentyodd Nine with baited breath on so many levels, especially continuing to cook up more Fufu Stew for a third year… I will try to fall in next week for a special anniversary type thing. Once again nothing fancy, but definitely funky!!!  I want to wish each and every one of you and all of yours a wonderful holiday season. Whatever you do, do it good, know that you are loved, and as always, please be safe…

Peace and blessings.

Another return to the farmers’ market (including Organic Fufu parts 1&2)

Hello, kiddies.

As another weekend wound down in beautiful Millville, Delaware, I composed these words from the sanctuary of our summer place. Bessie made the trip too, so lots of good choons were on hand. Normally we’d rough it with only a 30 GB mp3 player (yes, I call that roughing it), but this time was indeed special… even if we did absolutely nothing but burn lots of dinner on the ground (tuna steaks anyone?). We didn’t even go to the beach which in a way was a good thing. It was a trifle warm outside. I did miss a chance to go digging for new vinyl, but I’ll have my chance for that real soon. I haven’t been to Fell’s Point in weeks (yeah, I know Alan 🙂 )

It’s been a little bit since we last talked, I know. Dare I say that things have been a little busy in the kitchen as I struggle to get things ready for another Vinyl Record Day
blogswarm, once again headed up by my esteemed colleague JB over at The Hits Just Keep On Comin’. Of course, you can head on over to his spot for all the details on who’s participating and how you can participate…

Before I get into that however, I do have a very special post for your hungry ears right now. As you all know, the proprietor of the mighty Funky 16 Corners is now a member of the elite “millionaires’ club. In honour of the occasion, I put together a special batch of Fufu Stew. With this one, I not only give mad props to Mr. Grogan for having one of the best blogs ever, but also for helping me to affirm my devotion for all things “hammond”. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always appreciated the organ as a primary instrument in countless tunes, but the horizon was severely broadened when I found the  blogisphere. There are just way too many fine folks to thank for their invaluable assistance in making this mix possible, so instead of a long list, I’ll just say that you know where my faith and allegiance lies. To all of you, I say a most heartfelt thank you for all of your inspiration and of course, the occasional mp3 ingredients… I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is by far my most ambitious labour of love yet, choosing only the choicest ingredients acquired from the farmers market that I have certified as being 100% organ-ic (hmmm)… Now strap yourself in because as you may have guessed by now, I had to call it

For this freeform exercise I really am all over the place, but there’s that common thread that is sure to leave you thoroughly stuffed by the time you’ve finished taking it all in. The hardest part was the challenge of having to narrow it down to two servings. Have a look at the rather large menu then dig in. I really think you kids are gonna like this one.

Come On In My Kitchen part nine

Hello, kiddies.

Another installment coming your way. While I have a few minutes to de-stress from what was a very taxing day in the salt mines, I will be posting heavy once again. Not to slight any of the fine guest mixes that have graced this space in recent days (be sure to check ’em all out), but I have a couple of treats to lay on you which will be ready to serve tomorrow. While the pots are simmering, let me bring the next selector in.

As I stated on Monday, this is another special treat for me. For those of you who have been with me since the beginning, you know that I owe a huge debt of gratitude to this cat. When it comes to freeform exercises, no one does it better than the mighty Adam Weatherhead, better known in the land of blog as Diddywah. When he agreed to come on board, I was quite elated and anxious to see what he would bring to the table. Well, as one would guess, he didn’t disappoint. Enough of my rambling on though, let me get right to the heart of the matter and get you to give it up for one of the true veterans…

cookingraphic.jpg

Having enjoyed Vincent’s tasty treats for quite some time I was honoured to be invited into his kitchen to serve up my own dish.

Cookin’

Serves 45

What you need:

1 Australian soulcover
2 freakbeats, peeled and chopped (preferably European)
2 big N’awlins bangers, sliced
4-5 wheels of modfloorfiller
a large handful of perfectly ripe soulheartbreakers (Northern)
a pinch of freshly grated fratrock
a bunch of originalversions
4-5 tablespoons of funk
The Stroke

Making It
Boil the freakbeats for about 10 minutes then drain and toss them in some funk and frat rock. Roast for 15 minutes (or until the freakbeats are golden and the fratrock crispy). Build the bangers, with wedges of soulcover and boiled soulheartbreakers, on plates. Toast one side of The Stroke under a grill then turn over and toast the other side very lightly before placing some modfloorfiller on top. Grill until the modfloorfiller is melting, golden and a little bubbly (careful not to burn The Stroke). Scatter the roast freakbeats and crispy fratrock around your bangers then top with the modfloorfiller covered Stroke. Dress it up and dig in.

Once again, I thank you Diddywah for showing me that the preservation of freeform is not only important, but it’s a way of life…

I’ll be back quickly with some much needed fixes… and Devil Dick just came through a few minutes ago with that patented fuzzed out shit, so get ready for yet another power packed installment of Come On In My Kitchen. I hope you can stand it. As always, have a good day and be safe.

A guest post revisited (including Fufu Stew Gets A Bigger Fever)

Hello, kiddies.

Here’s another multi-purpose post, specifically designed to heat up these long winter nights… It’s a wee bit nipply here in the Fufu Stew kitchen (ah, the perils of surrounding myself with lots of old yet sensitive equipment). I’ve been wanting the upgrade for a long time now, but many things must take precedent. I can assure you that it’s all worth the little bits of adversity that I have to endure. Unlike the summer, it’s much easier to get warmer than it is to stay cool. A nice hot bowl of my favourite comfort food to fuel the body followed by a few hot toddies and I’m ready for anything.

I want to send this out first of all to Kevin of Got The Fever fame. I had been given the opportunity to do a guest post for his blog back in July which I thoroughly enjoyed, in fact, it fast became one of my favourite mixes that stayed in max rotation on the ol’ iPod for weeks. I was given 45 minutes to start a party by playing a few choice tunes. The post went very well, but I could have went just a little further. With this recipe, I did just that by adding ten more tunes in just the right places… The original theme was centered around a pool party, but now that the sun’s gone down in a manner of speaking, it’s time for everyone to come inside and gather round the fireplace… It takes me back to when I was a teenager, hanging out at Bill’s house with a bunch of my friends. His childhood home had the coolest basement. We’d all gather round the fireplace and chill with the music blasting, doing all the things that would clearly get us into big trouble (not too much imagination needed there). I can certainly see this mix being part of the soundtrack. You’re all invited to warm up with this eclectic mix of hot Jazz, hotter Funk and maybe even a few of those hot toddies if you’re so inclined.

And now for the closing commentary…

The time draws near for ol’ Bessie to be cleansed. They say that they are coming to install my new internet connection later this week so I want to be as ready as I can. I’ll be back a little stronger in two weeks, or at least I hope to be a little stronger at any rate. That all depends on the internet people. We’ll see. In the meantime, let me welcome The Hook and Sling to the army. Have a look around, there’s plenty of those “right arm” records and even more mixes to see and hear. Again, thanks for allowing me the indulgence and such. Have a good one and as always, be safe.

Peace and blessings.

Come and get it… Fufu Stew No. 8: A Fufu Stew Thanksgiving

This post is lovingly dedicated to my grandmother, Bertha Rose Myers (25 Jan 1917 – 24 Nov 1994)

Hello, kiddies.

Well the time has finally come. After weeks of preparation and many contributions from some of my favourite blogging colleagues, I am pleased to bring you A Fufu Stew Thanksgiving. Now for those of you living in parts of the world where Thanksgiving isn’t a part of the local culture, you are more than welcome to join in the occasion because as my mother likes to say, EVERY day is a day of thanksgiving. Why? Well, if you have your health and friends and family to share good times, then that in itself is a very good reason to be thankful. Believe me, it ain’t just about a turkey… One can have turkey any day of the week, besides, I don’t eat meat anyway.
Allow me to give you all just a brief glimpse into a typical Thanksgiving day the way I remember them growing up. I’m sure that some of you out there can relate. The dinner preparations usually begin about a day in advance with the sweet smell of pies and cakes baking non stop until the wee hours of the morning. My grandmother could bake a mean pumpkin pie, let me tell you. My uncles are also really good cooks as well. Their jobs come a little later. Starting at about six or so on Thanksgiving morning, and pretty much until it’s time to sit down at the table, the oven and stove are working overtime. Stuffed turkey, ham, roast beef… and let’s not forget the massive amount of side dishes like the mashed potatoes, collard greens, sweet potatoes, you get the picture. And then those hot cloverleaf rolls made from scratch. Mmmmm. Everyone gets invited from the neighbourhood, and of course the family comes in form various parts of town (we don’t have many relatives that live out of state). After a traditional blessing of the table, usually by my mother, we all proceed to “throw down” and fill our plates at least twice. The classic soul music plays in the background, and for about an hour or so, we all eat until we are so full that we need to loosen the belt… just to make room for the dessert. After that, we all usually take a quick power nap just to wake up and do it all over again. When it’s time for everyone to go home, they make sure to get the “care package” (some may call it a “doggie bag”) so they don’t have to cook dinner for at least a couple of days. Ahhh, memories.
Now at least for me, Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without watching the world famous Macy’s parade broadcast and of course, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I chose to use the Charlie Brown show as the basis for the first part of this post. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story, let me give you a quick synopsis. Peppermint Patty invites herself and a couple of friends over to Charlie Brown’s house for dinner, not knowing that he already has plans to go out of town to visit his grandparents. cap1281.jpgSince Charlie Brown is not too good at asserting himself, he commits to making dinner for his friends which consists mainly of snacks since he is not very good in the kitchen. This doesn’t set too well with Patty, and she makes sure to let him know about it “in no uncertain terms”. cap127.jpgPatty’s sidekick Marcie in turn tells her that she had no right to make a scene. So after a small apology, everyone gets to go with Charlie Brown and his sister Sally to their grandparents for a more traditional dinner. Linus of course drops the usual knowledge about the first Thanksgiving celebration back in the 17th century,cap125.jpg Lucy makes Charlie Brown look stupid once again with the old football gag, and there you have it. I’ve rambled on long enough, and since I know you are all hungry, let me get to serving…

When I originally planned to host this blogswarm of sorts, I had no idea just how many of my colleagues would participate. When all was said and done, eleven of them would chime in with contributions which was way beyond what I expected. There was enough in fact to make three mixes packed with tasty treats, so here comes part two. This one is for the fussy eater in all of us. Like King Curtis said in my all time favourite 45s “The Cook Out”, “Today we’re gonna talk about nothing but Soul food, nothing else, nothing else…” ahhh, smell the funky goodness.

And finally, the dessert. The third part of this post is made up of tunes that represent the second helpings, the slices of pie and cake, and the “care package” to take home when you realise that your eyes are bigger than your stomach. There’s also some extra goddies thrown in for good measure. The original plan was to have each contributor choose a couple of their all time fave songs along with the food related songs. Not everyone stuck to that plan, but then again, it doesn’t really matter because with all of this good music, how can you go wrong… Loosen up those belts, y’all

And for all of you satisfied patrons who helped Fufu Stew reach 50,000 hits last week, I am thankful for your continued support as well.

I’ll be taking some time away from the land of blog for a bit so that I can enjoy Thanksgiving with my family and friends, and to once again be a part of DJ Prestige’s Asbury Park 45 Sessions. I had so much fun back in September and met so many groovy people, I just had to go back for more. It also helps that Lou the pusherman will be in attendance. I’ve gotta get my fix of new 45s because December is fast approaching. Everybody knows that he’s got the funky heat, so needless to say, I’m gonna get me some… You can be a part of the sessions too by visiting www.jamnow.com/asburylanes, or dropping by the World Famous Asbury Lanes. The next time we meet, the funkiness will commence. Enjoy yourselves, enjoy the holiday and as always, be safe.

Peace and blessings.

P.S. For the newest member of the Fufu family, I have not forgotten your proper welcome… Stop by and say hello to Dirty Waters, with more of that soulful goodness that keeps you coming back for more and more. I’m looking forward to checking out your wares. I also want to send some extra love to Colin for hipping me to Parkdale Funk and the awesome podcasts available over there, as well as this all star extravaganza from the Oslo Soul Experience. I’ll see you all soon.

UPDATE: I was just informed by my friend DJ Blueprint that you can all go to his place for a helping of the latest installment in his excellent “Funk Workout” series. Where I come from, that would be the equivalent of what we call “house hopping”. I’ve been known to hit up a couple of extra houses for thanksgiving dinner myself, or for the occasional party. Amazingly enough, when I first asked him to join in, he agreed although he doesn’t normally celebrate Thanksgiving in his native Luxembourg. I kind of get the feeling that may change after this year because he has certainly picked up on some of my traditions. Thanks a lot for being an intregal part in the making of this post, Mike…

A Fifth Of FufuBlues

Hello, kiddies.

Here I am, back once more to feed your hungry souls. Before I begin, I must give a couple of important shoutouts.
First, to our brothers and sisters in southern California who were forced to evacuate their homes with only minutes to escape tragedy. I’m praying for you all…
Second, to all of the many firefighters and scores of volunteers who are risking their lives during this trying time…
Finally to FEMA, hoping that they have learned from previous mistakes (I will NOT go into details) and that they insure the safety and security of all of those displaced by the recent rash of fires in southern California.
In watching the news this week, I am again reminded that whenever I have a complaint about the way my life is going, I should be thankful because there are so many other people in this world who are enduring situations that are far worse than my simple gripes.

On to the business at hand.

I mentioned last time that I had a new Blues fix on tap in keeping with my pledge to preserve freeform for posterity. During the last marathon prep session, I managed to find some choice ingredients in the pantry, some of which I havent heard in a very long time. After some careful consideration, and a yearning for some hard fried and crispy guitar chops (which I do intend to elaborate on later), I present my latest recipe which I chose to call A Fifth Of FufuBlues.

As the weather gets a little cooler (I thought the day would never come), the time comes to enjoy yet another one of my favourite guilty pleasures. A good warm glass of cognac after a hard day’s work at the salt mines is the perfect remedy for relieving my basic stresses. While the juicy nectar was working it’s magic, I proceeded to fill the timeline with a wide assortment of funky rockers and straightforward numbers which gave me a good feeling inside as a good blues song usually does. This is another multimedia exercise which I am sending out to my friend Mike who will be celebrating another birthday this week, to KT because Leslie and I love her and miss her to pieces (we can’t wait ’til christmas), and of course to Larry, because he dug the first two fixes so much. I hope this one is just as good… anyway without further ado, here’s the list of ingredients.

…and now for the closing commentary

First, I want to say thanks to all of you bloggers who have agreed to participate in the Thanksgiving Day post. There’s lots of musical food stored in the fridge waiting to be cooked up, but there’s room for plenty more so if you want to join us, be sure to leave a comment and I’ll email you with the particulars. With a little luck, the post will be ready to serve around the 15th November…

I’ve got to send a special shoutout to the mighty DJ Blueprint who has just been making my day with the wealth of high quality mixes that he and his many guests have been serving up over the past few weeks. Be sure to visit and support This Is Tomorrow, and check out the experience for yourself…

I’d also like to send a warm hello and welcome to Semantik, owner and operator of Crate Kings. It’s always great to see the REAL hip hop being properly represented. The website is jam packed with everything from great mixes, tons of beats and samples and so much more for the armchair DJ to the seasoned pro.

For those of you who are gearing up for the Halloween festivities next week, have fun, be safe, save me the peanut butter cups and
save the eggs for breakfast… I’ve got all kinds of goods in store for November, including another very special edition of AntiDivas, just in time for someone’s birthday, in fact, there are lots of birthdays coming up around here in the next few weeks, including Haha Music who just celebrated one year of great freeform preservation here in the land of blog today. Congratulations on the milestone, Adam. Keep on fighting the good fight, ‘k?

With all that said, I’m going back into the kitchen because there’s lots to do. Until next time,

Peace and blessings.

P.S. I finally updated the Second Helpings page by reposting the first Fufu Blues fix. You can check it out by clicking here. Also, if you want to hear some ultra rare stuff from the Queen Of Soul, head on over to Fufu Snax…
